Death, Dying, Grieving and Organ and Tissue Donation Awareness – A Cultural Perspective’ Conference

The Australian Multicultural Foundation, funded by the Organ and Tissue Authority through the Community Awareness Grants Program, hosted a one day national conference and a half day forum entitled: ‘Death, Dying, Grieving and Organ and Tissue Donation Awareness – A Cultural Perspective’. The conference was held on Thursday 19 June 2014 in the Village Roadshow Theatrette at the State Library of Victoria.

The Conference was followed by a half day forum for invited stakeholders to formulate the conference outcomes.

The national conference brought together communities, professionals and practitioners from around Australia and focused on the diverse beliefs and practices surrounding death and the dying person. It also raised understanding and awareness about the importance of organ and tissue donation.

Australia is a multicultural and multi-faith society with many different religious, spiritual and cultural beliefs and rituals that can influence people’s perceptions and attitudes towards death, dying and grieving. As people from all walks of life depend on organ and tissue transplants regardless of age, race, ethnicity, religion or language, it is important that uncertainties about cultural and religious perspectives are addressed. This conference provided an enhanced cultural awareness on issues pertaining to death, dying, grieving and organ and tissue donation.
