Media Release: The AMF welcomes the announcement to provide permanent protection to 12,000 Syrian Refugees

The Australian Multicultural Foundation (AMF) welcomes the announcement to provide permanent protection to 12,000 Syrian Refugees.

It is encouraging to see the Australian Government’s commitment to increase the refugee settlement numbers in response to this tragic humanitarian crisis.

It is however imperative to do more where possible to restore the dignity, resilience and confidence of millions of people whose lives have been shattered by this global crisis and human tragedy. Therefore, the AMF also supports the call for a longer-term vision with sustainable, equitable and non-discriminatory humanitarian practices.

Dr Hass Dellal, AMF Director, said ‘Australia has always prided itself on its multicultural experience and a “fair go” for all and that it goes without say that all refugees should be settled regardless of their cultural or religious backgrounds’.

The courage and generosity of all Australians coming together in their community to meet challenges is a recurring theme in the Australian story. The Australian people have come together once again to demonstrate their compassion and generosity in times of need.
