Regardless of the way in which these recruiters justify their means, the messages that they send to young people are the same: that the young person will be valued, recognised and appreciated more by befriending them or their group than by engaging with their current community.

The reality is usually very different, with many recruiters or groups exploiting young people in a range of harmful ways.
