On Tuesday 23 April, the Australian Multicultural Foundation (AMF) proudly launched The Power of Diversity: A History of the Australian Multicultural Foundation at the stunning Museo Italiano in Melbourne. The book was officially launched by Professor Kwong Lee Dow AO, the AMF’s longest-serving Chair, and brought together AMF board members, past and present staff, long-time supporters, and valued partners in a celebration of the Foundation’s rich history.
Authored by Michael Harden and published by Hardie Grant Media, The Power of Diversity chronicles over 35 years of the AMF’s work since its establishment in 1988. The book captures the vision and dedication of the AMF’s founding Chair, the late Sir James Gobbo AC, CVO, QC, and the unparalleled leadership of founding Executive Director and current Chair, Dr Hass Dellal AO. From government to the corporate world, the arts to sport, and interfaith dialogue to emergency management, Hass’s legacy of strategic collaboration and bridge-building has helped shape a more inclusive and successful multicultural Australia.
The launch was eloquently emceed by Board Secretary Lynn Cain, whose wit and warmth kept the evening flowing seamlessly. Guests were treated to reflections from Professor Lee Dow, author Michael Harden, and Dr Hass, who each paid tribute to the many individuals: staff, directors, members, supporters, and community leaders who have all contributed to the Foundation’s journey.
Special thanks to COASIT Melbourne for helping bring the event to life, and to Readings for supporting and showcasing this landmark publication. As Michael Harden shared on the night, the process of documenting the AMF’s history- through interviews with its founders and a deep dive into its many initiatives, was both a joy and a privilege.
For many, including those currently serving at the AMF, it was an evening of pride, reflection, and renewed purpose. As Katrina Scaramella, AMF Project, Research and Training manager, expressed, “It has been the greatest privilege of not only my life but career to contribute to this mammoth legacy and history. An organisation I am proud to serve, and a professional family I am proud to serve alongside.”
