Youth Leadership Program

Youth Leadership Program

From 9-11 November, ten youth leaders from culturally diverse backgrounds participated in a two day Youth Leadership Program, run by the Australian Multicultural Foundation in partnership with the Museum of Australian Democracy and supported by the Scanlon Foundation. The program was held at the Museum at Old Parliament House in Canberra.

The program equipped the participants with skills and confidence that will enhance their ability to act as leaders in a democratic and socially cohesive Australia. The interactive and challenging program included media training through professional PR media consultants, engagement with prominent leaders, entrepreneurship, public speaking, communication and mentorship skills.

The program prepared participants to further engage with the broader community, to express views and thoughts with confidence, to interact with prominent community leaders, scholars and politicians, and build upon their leadership and mentoring skills to work with other young people in their communities.

The participants benefited greatly from the experiences and expertise of several high calibre speakers and presenters.  We had the pleasure of Senator Concetta Fierravanti-Wells delivering a presentation in the Senate Room and answering questions about political leadership. We were fortunate to have Maria Vamvakinou MP deliver a presentation in the Cabinet Room, based upon her personal experiences, followed by a discussion about how one gets their issues taken up by political leaders.

It was a wonderful experience to hold the program at Old Parliament House, such an iconic and significant building in the history of Australian democracy.

The ten young people will join and lead twenty others at a Youth Forum in April 2016. The Youth Forum will present a communique on an issue of concern, and explore the value of democracy, leadership, innovation, working with Australia, and the ability to engage with politicians.
